SMEs find it difficult to renew their expertise. Research carried out by the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration (NHH) shows that both competence and value creation can be increased by using accountants as strategic advisors.
Updating and increasing their expertise is a recurrent problem for Norwegian small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). They have neither the time nor the resources to draw up strategies in their day-to-day battle to survive. External consultancy services can sometimes be seen as too expensive – the key for these companies is to use their accountant as a strategic advisor. Among those making this assertion is the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration (NHH), which has conducted a research project on value creation in SMEs. In small companies that often have no more than 5-10 employees, the accounting advisor can be seen as a partner rather than a service provider.
What is the advantage of using your accountant as an advisor? The accountant knows the company, because he knows its accounts. The accounts are essential to understanding the company’s development potential, as they give him first-hand knowledge and unique insight into the company. The accountant can make a crucial difference when he steps into the role of advisor.
